“I hold it true that thoughts are things;
They’re endowed with bodies and breath and wings:
And that we send them forth to fill
The world with good results or ill.
That which we call our secret thought
Speeds forth to earth’s remotest spot,
Leaving it’s blessings or it’s woes
Like tracks behind it as it goes.
We build our future thought by thought,
for good or ill yet know it not.
Yet so the universe was wrought.
Thought is another name for fate;
Choose them thy destiny and wait,
For love brings love and hate brings hate.”
Henry Van Dyke
I just love that poem. I wouldn’t have understood a bit of it 10 years ago, nor would I have probably cared…
It’s funny how life gives us just what we put out. I remember how I was an angry young man, feeling as if the world owed me something.
In retrospect, I realize how angry I was at almost everybody who had ever been in my life. What a waste!
I also didn’t have many people in my life at the time either, I wonder why.
When I really analyze it, I attracted all those experiences with my bad attitude.
See I was the youngest in my immediate family which as the saying goes shi* flows down hill. I was also the youngest of all my cousins, and frankly I don’t think any of us were getting our needs met as kids.
So I was angry about being everyone’s shi* heap, not feeling loved, and certainly feeling abandoned.
It was a tough experience, but frankly I’ve heard worse, much worse. So much worse I feel ashamed to have ever felt sorry for myself!
I don’t feel angry or sorry for myself anymore, but grateful, truly thankful to be alive. I’m so happy and grateful for so many things. I only wish I had discovered gratitude sooner!
I could list all the things I’m grateful for but I don’t think I or you want a post that long; but if I were to say anything in defense of gratitude it would be that it’s part of the equation in bringing you success and happiness and the life of your dreams(unless your dreams are negative).
Every successful person I have ever talked to at length has a big attitude of gratitude, and I believe it’s an important part of a successful life if not THE most important part.
With gratitude you can overcome ANYTHING and EVERYTHING! It might be the most hideous terrible thing to ever happen, you could be hurt really bad and as long as you keep gratitude in the fore front of your mind, things can still look rosy.
Gratitude help you see the bright side of any darkness. See, I am so happy and grateful for my past, for everything that has happened to me, and life just keeps getting better and better.
Things aren’t always rosy, but I certainly have the ability to frame the things that happen in my world how I want, and gratitude enables me and frees me up to see the light in any situation.
I heard a story about W. Clement Stone, who at one time was the richest man in america, and he had a process he called his ‘That’s Good Therapy’. Whenever anything ‘bad’ happened he would say outloud:
‘That’s Good’. Didn’t matter what it was, he refused to let life get him down!
And sure enough he always found the good in those situations. So look around you, are there things in your life that might not be the most positive? Can you look for something good about them?
Say you lost your job, and have no income coming in; the good might be that you have the time to start your own company, or build a new resume, or learn a new skill. It could be anything.
It’s not always the easiest to see the good in the ‘bad’, but if you look I think you will always find something.
If you are having trouble finding the good, ask yourself: “what’s the worst that could happen?” “Do I really think that will happen?” Most likely we are just letting our minds run away with themselves in worry.
You could also use the ‘Cosmic Iceball Theory’ which goes: ‘In a few million years this planet is just going to be a big iceball floating in space so what will this moment matter-really’.
Might sound over simplified, but life goes on and we shouldn’t sweat the small stuff! And as the book says “it’s all small stuff”.
I hope that this post helps some of you, as it’s my goal in life to help inspire others to success in thier lives.
Thank You! To Your Ultimate Success! Jonathan
